In some areas in Europe, if you don't pre-purchase an excursion, you will need a visa.  They are not difficult to obtain, but it takes a little bit of time and $125.00.  So, check out the U.S. Department of State Web site for more specific information on the foreign entry requirements for the areas you are visiting.   Be sure to check out the International Travel section on this site as well.
